Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition defined by dramatic shifts in mood, energy, and activity—ranging from elevated, euphoric states (mania or hypomania) to intense, often overwhelming depressive episodes.

According to the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, approximately 5.7 million adult Americans—about 2.6% of the adult U.S. population—are affected by bipolar disorder each year.
Other estimates suggest a slightly higher lifetime prevalence of around 4.4%, meaning many more people will experience bipolar disorder at some point in their lives . These mood swings can profoundly impact daily life, relationships, and overall well-being, especially when left untreated.

At Elevate Minds Psychiatry, our experienced psychiatric team offers a multifaceted, compassionate approach—whether you prefer in-person sessions or the flexibility of telemedicine. We’re committed to helping you find relief, manage symptoms, and improve your quality of life.

Bipolar disorder isn’t one-size-fits-all—there are several distinct forms, each with its own patterns of mood changes:

Bipolar I Disorder – Marked by at least one full manic episode, often lasting a week or more, that may be followed by hypomanic or depressive episodes. Periods of stable mood can occur in between.

Bipolar II Disorder – Defined by at least one hypomanic episode and one major depressive episode. While the highs of hypomania are less intense than full mania, the depressive periods can be equally challenging.

Cyclothymic Disorder (Cyclothymia) – A milder, chronic form of bipolar disorder with frequent emotional ups and downs over two years or more. While symptoms are less severe, they can still affect daily life and relationships.
The symptoms of bipolar disorder can look very different depending on whether you’re experiencing a manic, hypomanic, or depressive episode. Some common signs include:

  • Elevated or unusually high mood
  • Engaging in risky or impulsive behaviors
  • Racing thoughts and rapid speech
  • Increased irritability or agitation
  • Making grand plans or big decisions without considering consequences
  • Overspending or other impulsive actions
  • Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or emptiness
  • Changes in appetite or eating habits
  • Sleeping too little or sleeping excessively

Thoughts of self-harm or suicide

Diagnosing bipolar disorder starts with a thorough evaluation by your mental health provider. They’ll ask about your medical history, family background, and symptoms—when they began, how often they happen, and how they affect your life.

Your provider will use this information to see if your experiences match what’s known about bipolar disorder. Sometimes, they may also recommend lab tests to rule out other health issues that could be causing your symptoms.

The goal is to get a clear picture so you can receive the right care and support.

Bipolar disorder is often treated using a combination of approaches tailored to your needs, including:

  • Talk therapies like psychotherapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Medications such as mood stabilizers, antidepressants, and antipsychotics
  • Lifestyle changes that support overall wellness and mood balance
