ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that can impact both children and adults. It’s characterized by symptoms like inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, which can affect your ability to thrive at school, work, home, and in social situations. Identifying your specific type of ADHD and addressing your individual symptoms is key to finding the right treatment approach.

ADHD commonly presents in three different types, each with distinct symptoms:

  • Inattentive (Distractible) Type: Individuals with this type often struggle to maintain focus, follow detailed instructions, and stay organized. They may seem forgetful, easily distracted, or have trouble completing tasks and conversations.

  • Hyperactive/Impulsive Type: This type is marked by constant movement, difficulty sitting still, interrupting others, and talking excessively. People with this form often act before thinking and may feel restless or impatient. It’s the least common of the three types.

  • Combined Type: This is the most common presentation of ADHD, where symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity occur together. Individuals may experience challenges with focus, organization, impulse control, and restlessness all at once.

A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation is essential to accurately identify which type of ADHD is present in children and adults. Understanding your specific symptoms helps create a tailored treatment plan that best supports your unique needs.

ADHD is a complex condition that can be challenging to recognize and diagnose because symptoms often vary based on the type of ADHD and can look different in men, women, and children. Some common signs include:

  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Interrupting others
  • Forgetfulness
  • Making careless mistakes at school or work
  • Trouble finishing tasks
  • Fidgeting or restlessness
  • Talking excessively
  • Difficulty sleeping or irregular sleep patterns
  • Poor organizational skills
  • Impatience
  • Mood swings
  • Feelings of anxiety or depression

While ADHD symptoms may change as you age, they don’t always go away completely. With the right treatment plan, you can better manage your symptoms, boost your productivity, strengthen your relationships, and find greater personal fulfillment.

If you have ADHD, there are several effective treatment options designed to help you manage symptoms and improve your quality of life. Medication is often a key component and may include stimulants like methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) or amphetamines (Adderall, Vyvanse), which help improve focus and reduce impulsivity. Non-stimulant options such as atomoxetine (Strattera) or certain antidepressants may also be recommended based on your individual needs.

Alongside medication, behavioral therapies like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) provide valuable tools for improving organization, managing emotions, and developing coping skills. Holistic treatments—including lifestyle changes like regular exercise, nutrition support, mindfulness practices, and sleep hygiene—can also play an important role in supporting your overall wellness.

Lab draws may be utilized to assess underlying factors such as nutrient deficiencies or hormonal imbalances that can influence ADHD symptoms and overall mental health, allowing for a more comprehensive and personalized treatment plan.

Your provider will work closely with you to tailor a plan that fits your unique needs and goals, helping you thrive at home, work, and in your relationships.
